Ian here, back from a wonderful two week European getaway, highlighted by eating, drinking, sightseeing, but most of all… crate digging. With the dollar strong and the vinyl resurgence in full force, I took some opportunities to load my collection up with imports (had to buy a new suitcase to bring my haul back with me).
From a Japanese LP store in Prague to a punk rock palace in Paris, here’s what I scored.
First stop - Warsaw
Antykwariat Tampa (ul. Tampa 45)
After attempting a dose of culture at the Chopin Museum, I happily stumbled upon this quaint record store/bookstore and spent an hour or so digging through their crates, with the big coup here being a UK first pressing of Pink Floyd’s Ummagumma… for the equivalent of $30 USD (about 260 Polish zloty)… SCORE.
Also found a killer, unofficial Queens of the Stone Age bootleg “Alcohol & Vicodan” - with no label or release info, very cool.
Some other gems from Warsaw:
Next stop - Paris
Born Bad Record Shop (11 Rue Saint-Sabin, 75011 Paris, France)
Also a great record label - Born Bad Records - this gem in Paris specializes in punk, hardcore, metal, post-punk, garage & more and was one of my favorite stops of the trip. If you’re a fan of the harder stuff, do not miss this on your next trip to Paris.
First up, this killer French Punk Anthems collection released by Born Bad highlighting some late 70s gems that I’d never heard before and am very grateful I found, including Nouveaux Riches, Gasoline, Sexe a Pile and more, definitely check this one out:
The Misfits, Live from Max’s Kansas City in 1978, on yellow vinyl:
Cro-Mags early 90’s release “Near Death Experience” - deep into their Hare Krishna phase, a new listen for me:
Some other finds from Born Bad’s deep crates:
Next stop - Prague
Japan LP Shop (Nové Město, Praha 1)
So here’s something you don’t hear every day - a lifelong music fan, who opened a record shop up in Prague, specializing ONLY in Japanese releases, because, in his own words - “Japan sounds BEST!”… Can’t argue there. You sir, are a legend.
Bob Dylan - Desire (Japanese pressing w/ obi strip):
Hawkwind - The Hawkwind Collection (Japanese pressing):
Motorhead - No Sleep ’til Hammersmith (Japanese pressing):
Santana - Abraxas (Japanese pressing w/ glossy metallic cover):
Jimi Hendrix - Cosmic Turnaround (Japanese pressing):
Jimi Hendrix - High, Live ’N Dirty (Limited Edition Japanese pressing):
Music Antiquariat (Tržiště 519/22, 110 00 Praha 1, Czech Republic)
A small record store focusing mainly on classical vinyl, but with some cool used rock LPs and some GREAT prices.
That’s all folks, thanks for checking out the blog! Got any international crate digging adventures you want to share? We’d love to hear!
