Product Notes

2012 saw the reunification of all four original members of Mid Atlantic, with writing beginning in early July and recording in May of 2013. The God of the Dead departs from Mid Atlantic's previous sonic endeavor by stripping down the instrumentation to craft an album that has more breathing room in terms of ambient textures and melodic hooks. Wishing to be deliberate in the production process, Mid Atlantic recorded The God of the Dead over the course of 5 days with Craig Newnes and Spencer Cheyne of The Station recording studio in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Thematically, The God of the Dead encapsulates the divergent worldviews of each of the band members and attempts to bring them into dialogue with one another. An overt emphasis on a heavier, darker sound permeates side A of the record while a light, reflective mood accompanies side B. Such a construction strives towards a picture of the life of the mind / body as it pertains to dealing with realities such as anxiety, beauty, depression, fear, faith, liberation, and in an important sense, the nature of truth. "In some ways" comments Joel, "this album means something different to each member of the band. If you had a conversation with any one of us, you'd likely get a different perspective, but it would be one you could dialogue with and I think that's exciting." The difference in opinion and perspective on this record-far from creating discord-actually provides a sense of coherence and a furthering of the musical enterprise initiated by The Great War (2008).
