Product Notes

Conducting the National Anthem from the Red Fort in Delhi in 1947 ushering in India's independence - pioneering innovative experimental music and composing scores for a multitude of films and stage productions - conductor and music coordinator of the Academy Award winning film "Gandhi" - these are just a few of the highlights from master flautist Vijay Raghav Rao's long and impressive career. A disciple of master Ravi Shankar, Rao studied with Shankar from 1945-1975 and has performed internationally since the 1950s. This classic session featuring the late tabla master Alla Rakha and an Indian Folk Ensemble including two sitars, has been regarded as one of the finest examples of traditional Indian folk music ever recorded. These newly remastered recordings will be a welcome addition, not only for the Indian music enthusiast, but for all fans of great World music.
