Product Notes

Nick Lowe Cd Bundle Six CD set. Limited edition bundle containing digitally remastered versions of British singer/songwriter Nick Lowe's solo albums originally released on Columbia Records between the years 1982 and 1990. Contains the albums Nick the Knife (1982), The Abominable Showman (1983), Nick Lowe & His Cowboy Outfit (1984), The Rose Of England (1985), Pinker And Prouder Than Previous (1988), and Party Of One (1990). Lowe has been part of the British music scene since the '60s but didn't achieve critical and commercial success until the late '70s thanks to his production work and his beloved solo catalog.

NICK THE KNIFE

Nick the Knife is a 1982 album by Nick Lowe. The album was Lowe's third solo LP, and his first since the 1981 breakup of his band Rockpile. However, the record still has several Rockpile ties, as Lowe's former bandmates Billy Bremner and Terry Williams play on the album. In addition, Lowe does a slowed-down remake of the Rockpile song "Heart"; the original version can be found on the band's album Seconds of Pleasure sung by Bremner.

ABOMINABLE SHOWMAN

Nick Lowe's Abominable Showman was recorded with his post-Rockpile touring band Noise to Go. Following the blueprint of Rockpile, the band also featured a second lead vocalist in erstwhile Ace frontman Paul Carrack and had been featured on the Lowe-produced Carrack album Suburban Voodoo (as well as on this album s duet Wish You Were Here). This unit could play hard driving rock & roll and soulful pop music, all in evidence here from the opener (and concert favorite) Raging Eyes to the full on pop-soul of Time Wounds All Heels. And the band barnstormed the USA opening for the likes of The Cars and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers which yields the bonus of live tracks from Cleveland s Agora.

NICK LOWE AND HIS COWBOY OUTFIT

While Cowboy Outfit has a slightly different meaning as UK Slang, Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit marks a turn towards a more rootsy persona for our hero. Anchored by the international number one Half a Boy and Half a Man, the album introduces a tex-mex/roller-rink organ sound, although the lineup of Bobby Irwin, Paul Carrack, Martin Belmont and Lowe is essentially unchanged. Newly discovered Johnny Horton covers Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor and Walk on By (included here as bonus tracks) show that there may have been a more twangy intention to the record- but as it is full on rockers like Maureen and Mickey Jupps You'll Never Get Me Up (in One of Those) rub shoulders with pop like Dusty Springfields Breakaway and Nicks own L.A.F.S. (featuring the TKO Horns who had recently punched up arranger Elvis Costellos own Everyday I Write the Book).

ROSE OF ENGLAND

The Rose of England by Nick Lowe and his Cowboy Outfit - Teaming up again with his Cowboy Outfit, Nick Lowe's The Rose of England remains a highly engaging and often overlooked album. The title track tells a World War I-era tale that was sturdy enough to be covered by Brit-folkies The Oyster Band, and features a trademark Lowe hook. Nick took a huge swing at the charts, recording his version (previously recorded by Dave Edmunds, and played live by Rockpile) of his classic I Knew the Bride with pal Huey Lewis producing and his band the News providing the track. Fame and fortune may not have followed, but a solid batch of songs including covers of pals John Hiatt (She Don't Love Nobody) and Elvis Costello (Indoor Fireworks) rubbed shoulders with Nicks originals as well as Nicks most-covered cover (Moon Mullicans 7 Nights to Rock).

PARTY OF ONE

For 1990's Party of One, the personnel was drawn from Nick's bandmates on 1987's John Hiatt masterpiece, Bring the Family (Lowe on bass, Jim Keltner on drums and Ry Cooder on guitar) combined with the twin heads of the band The Moonlighters (Austin DeLone - ex of Eggs Over Easy and Bill Kirchen - original Lost Planet Airman and twang kingpin). Nick brought in Dave Edmunds to produce and play even more guitar. They rip through a fantastic batch of original songs highlighted by "All Men Are Liars" and "What's Shakin' on the Hill" which are still staples of Nick's live show. This strong effort led into the Little Village project and can be considered the final chapter in the first half of Nick's career.

PINKER & PROUDER

Vinyl LP pressing. Yep Roc Records will reissue six classic yet long unavailable Nick Lowe albums, fulfilling a longstanding goal of bringing the entire catalog of one of it's flagship artists back into print and available on one label. The albums - Nick the Knife, The Abominable Showman, Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit, The Rose of England, Pinker and Prouder Than Previous, and Party of One - span the years 1982 to 1990, and represent a crucial bridge from Lowe's trailblazing '70s work to the "remarkable second wind" (New York Times) and widespread critical acclaim that have characterized his more recent releases. Perhaps Nick Lowe's most varied release, 1988's Pinker and Prouder Than Previous was recorded in Austin, Texas, the famed Rockfield Studios in Wales, and in London. Tapping everyone from his current associates Bobby Irwin, Paul Carrack and Martin Belmont to the Fabulous Thunderbirds and The Men They Couldn't Hang to back him up, this excellent 11-track mix of originals and covers actually predicts the stripped down style that revived his career a few years later.
