Description
No Depression started it's life as a quarterly print magazine in 1995, fueled by it's founding editors' passion for alt-country music and long-form journalism.
Over the course of it's first print run, it helped solidify the importance of Americana and roots music on the national stage. In the years since, No Depression has developed a robust web publication, publishing long features, honest criticism, and weekly columns in addition to it's wealth of community-driven content.
In 2015, to celebrate the publication's 20th anniversary, the FreshGrass Foundation brought it back to print as a high-end, ad-free, quarterly journal focused once again on long-form music journalism.
Roots music has a special relationship with the venues in which it’s played — from the unassuming living rooms to the fancy recording studios to the largest outdoor festivals. As the world continues to navigate the future of performing, No Depression has dedicated an entire issue to the spaces and places that facilitate gathering, performance, recording, music-making, community building, and more.
Included in this issue:
- When Venues Thrive, Communities Grow - Rev. Moose (NIVA)
- This Must Be The Place: A photo essay of roots musicians on their favorite places and spaces
- Merlefest Moments: Five festival veterans explain the magic - Stacy Chandler
- Front and Center: How Missouri's Roots N Blues Festival is closing the gender gap - Laura Scholz
- Keep Rolling: Brooklyn Bowl scores with music venue-bowling alley hybrid model - Caitlin Wolper
- Living History: Venues on the National Register of Historic Places keep the music going - Joshua M. Miller
- Flamenco Resistance: Spain's most famous dance fights for survival in the modern world - Judy Cantor-Navas
- Folk Club: South London artists find connection as they blend musical traditions - Patrick Clarke
- Street Style: Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová on the art of busking and the 15th anniversary of 'Once' - Will Hodge
- Recording on the Riviera: Actor Brad Pitt taps producer Damien Quintard to transform the studio at Château Miraval - Hilary Saunders
- Safe at Home: Artists find new freedom recoding in familiar places - Andy Crump
- The Ranch Expands Its Reach: Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch continues to connect teachers and students - Annie Zaleski
- Word of Mouth: Northern Mississippi's Dial Back Sound makes DIY work - Blake Ells
- Creative Community: The Grahams' 3Sirens project aims to create an artistic utopia - Margaret Littman
